Point of View

The novel is narrated in the first-person, always from the perspective of Judy, a middle-aged writer, mother, and wife. She is consumed by loneliness as she attempts to navigate the combination of feelings that surface as a result of her husband and son drifting away from her. The author places no limitations on the access to Judy’s inner thoughts, allowing the reader to understand her true motivations, fears, and conflicts. Judy is rarely completely honest with the people in her life, but her husband always seems to know which buttons to press to make her feel less than, showing how easy it is for family to read her emotions. Judy wishes to reconnect with her son and feel like a capable mother again, longing to be close to other people and feel included. She turns to her dog, Charlotte, to give her another chance...
