Annelise
Annelise is a young woman coming of age on the eve of World War II amidst the rise of anti-Jewish sentiment that targets her and her family. After she finishes high school, she continues to work in her family’s bakery while falling in love with her childhood friend, Max. After Max leaves her to marry another girl, she forms a relationship with a slightly older man named Walter. They marry and have a daughter, Ruth, as the situation in Germany deteriorates further. After the violence and instability reach a head and Jews are subject to more rules and unfair regulations, Annelise and Walter must emigrate to the United States to give their daughter a more stable upbringing.
