Point of View
This story is told from the first-person point of view of Joseph. This first-person point of view is introduced in the first sentence of the novel: “The breeze tugged at my hair and cooled my skin” (1). The reader is kept in suspense about Joseph’s name until he introduces himself to Catalina at Big Tom’s Fall. Through the course of the novel, Joseph tells the story to a variety of different audiences. As Joseph and Allie are driving to North Carolina to find out if Jake really faked his own death, Joseph tells his story to Allie. At another point, Joseph tells the story of how he met Suzy’s father in the war to Suzy. He never speaks directly to the audience.
