Summary
In Chapter 8, Joseph left Catalina and the children at the bus station. When he was a few miles out of town, he reminded himself he would not have left them there alone when he was younger. Catalina looked suspicious when he told her he was going to drive them, but he told her that he had a bad feeling.
In Chapter 9, as they drove, Catalina opened up and told Joseph the story of how she had gotten involved with Juan. Her first husband and the father of her children had been a dentist and a kind man. He was shot in the street during a robbery. The children saw him die.
