Summary
Virgil:
Virgil’s father, an immigrant from Hati who drove a taxi saw a way to make money when he saw the land being cleared for a garden site. He believed he could sell baby lettuce to restaurant owners. Virgil notes that the dirt in the garden was so hard that his shovel bounced off it when he tried digging. During the digging, Virgil found a locket with a picture of a young girl inside. Virgil kept the locket.
Virgil and his father kept digging up land until he had a patch that was significantly larger than all the other patches. A woman, whom Virgil recognized as Miss Fleck, his third-grade teacher criticized Virgil’s father for hogging so much land. Virgil’s father lied and said he was planting for his relatives who lived nearby.
