Summary
Kim:
Kim’s mother and sister honor the ten-year anniversary of Kim’s father’s death. Nine-year-old Kim never knew her father. She took a thermos of water, some dried lima beans, and a spoon and walked to a vacant, trash-filled lot next to the apartment building in which she lived. Because Kim’s father had been a farmer, she believed that he would watch the seeds grow into plants and would know that she was his daughter.
Ana:
Ana watched as Kim dug in the vacant lot. Ana had seen her neighborhood change from one inhabited by working class people into one that was crime infested when the factories in the area closed.
