Summary

The fifth chapter opens on Lizzie recalling her father’s wedding to Abby Borden as she thinks about Mrs. Borden’s body lying on the floor. Two police officers run from the dining room upstairs to investigate and summon the doctor. Bridget and Mrs. Churchill have returned to the kitchen, where they tearily inform Lizzie that they found Mrs. Borden’s bloody body.

The police instruct Lizzie to not leave the room as they continue their investigation, mentioning that they believe the killer may still be in the house. Lizzie responds by vocalizing her desire for her sister’s return. An officer then asks Lizzie is she is alright, as she has been rubbing her head unconsciously.
