Summary

Chapter four centers on Benjamin as he meets a man named John on August 3, 1892. The two met in an alley while relieving themselves. They strike up an amiable conversation that is interrupted by a police officer rebuking them for public indecency. When the officer becomes belligerent and begins attacking John, Benjamin assaults the policeman and he and his new friend leave.

John invites Benjamin to join him for a drink, stating that he owes Benjamin for defending him.
