Summary
On the morning of August 3, 1892, Bridget wakes in the Borden house to reflect on the first time she tried to leave the family’s service. After she pulls herself from her longing for home, she goes to the front door of the house to meet the milkman. She gossips with him for a short while about the Borden family before he has to leave. On her way to the kitchen to begin preparing breakfast, Bridget hears Lizzie’s pigeons in the barn and thinks of how odd it is that Lizzie uses them as substitutes from children instead of starting a real family.
A little later, Mr. and Mrs. Borden come downstairs. Bridget notes that they both seem quite sick. When Bridget is sent to fetch Lizzie for breakfast, they engage in their morning ritual, which Bridget dislikes, of Bridget sneaking Lizzie a thimble...
