Book 1: Dr. David Strauss, Part One: Chapters 7 - 12 Summary

David and Heather sneak upstairs to see Elena Strauss, the eighty-two-year-old grandmother to David and surrogate parent when his own had perished in 1971. Her off and on failing health is a topic of conversation, and David tries to convince her not to go to the Strauss family hotel for spring cleaning this year. Yet she says the only thing that will stop her is if the Nazis themselves come back. Meanwhile, at the awards, Beri and Nick are making their acceptance speech when a man pushes himself on stage. "I come from the Storm Troop. I carry this message of Dachau Two!" With that, he shoots Nick four times and Beri twice. Before anyone can recover their senses, he then shoots himself. At the Strauss home many miles away...
