Chapter 3 - The Letter Summary
Madame Steichen, Dawn's piano teacher, keeps Dawn from losing her mind during her first several months in the Bernhardt School. Although she had taken piano lessons before, Madame Steichen tells her to forget anything she thought she knew about piano because she considers Dawn's playing so bad. By the end of the summer, Madame Steichen tells Dawn she has the talent to be a concert pianist.
Although Dawn's mother never comes to visit her as she promised, she does call Dawn one day. She makes excuses that she hasn't felt well. When Dawn tries to talk to her mother about the lies and how they have affected her, her mother suddenly becomes tired and has to get off the phone. Dawn begs for the name of her father, but her mother hangs up the phone. Dawn, again...
