The Book

The first edition book Saul steals from the library symbolizes generosity. Though Saul knows he should not have taken the book, he wants to sell it in order to leave some money behind for Nadia after he dies. After his passing, Rachel and Ethan become involved in the book's sale. Their devotion to fulfilling Saul's wish illustrates their loyalty to Saul, and their desire to help Nadia at all costs.

Saul's New Apartment

The new apartment Saul moves into after breaking up with Kirk symbolizes freedom. Saul is not merely free of Kirk, but moving grants him perspective on his entire life. He is suddenly liberated from want. Living in the smaller, but better lit apartment changes the way he sees himself and his circumstances. He is not only comfortable being alone, but has rid himself of all desire beyond the present moment.
