Summary
Tony stayed away for five days. M considered asking L to leave. She recalled an incident when L had been furious with Tony for shooting a deer. Tony came back saying he forgave M, but later that night Brett called round in distress because of L, who had suffered a stroke. L stayed in hospital for a fortnight before returning to the second place. The stroke had incapacitated him, but he had no home to go back to and no one else to look after him. Brett’s rich cousin flew over to pick her up, and Kurt left with them, to be the cousin’s personal secretary.
M turns her attention to the popularity of the art L created after his stroke (some self-portraits, and his “night paintings” of the marsh), before resuming her account of his recovery (182). Tony carried him around...
