Relationships
One of the primary themes running through the novel is relationships. The novel reveals that even the individuals that make up a family have different relationships among the family members. For example, Jessica is much closer to her father than she is to her mother. On the other hand, Bethany is much closer to their mother than she is to their father.
Friendship is another type of relationship the novel tackles. Jessica goes through many different friends as the novel unfolds. The only friendship that remains the same is the one between Jessica and Hope. Primarily, the girls end up just being pen pals, but they are able to reunite and be together at the end of the novel when Hope shows up for Jessica's graduation. Jessica also realizes what a good friend Bridget has always been to her, but that Jessica has taken their friendship for granted...
