In Washington, D.C., Alex Fletcher and John Devereaux enter the back of the St. James hotel, sneak up the maintenance stairs and go to room 502. The two agents stop long enough to say that they are undertaking this assignment "For Harold Hill and Carol." They enter the room and Betsy Porte-Smith - mistakenly identified as Carrie Rose - reaches for a nightstand. She is shot and killed by Devereaux who had orders not to return the woman alive.
A diary entry written by Carrie indicates that she believes she has succeeded in her own plan. Carrie writes that Damian trained her, then refused to let her use that training.
