In Washington, D.C., Carrie Rose, going by the name Mrs. Susan Chaplin, is at the Gralyn Hotel meeting with Betsy Porte-Smith - a London prostitute. The two women greatly resemble each other. Carrie tells Betsy that she has an "unusual" proposition in mind. Carrie says that her husband is due to arrive in Washington within the next week and that she isn't able to meet him. She wants Betsy to meet Damian and to "stay with him a night if I'm not here ... That's all." Carrie says she'll pay two hundred dollars a day plus the room at the St. James Hotel, and that Betsy is free to "work" until Damian arrives. Carrie flies out for Zurich.
