Pages 19-44 Summary
"It's a long story, but I won't tell you everything. Some details won't be of great interest to you, while others...." (Chapter 2, pg. 19). This is how Mustafa begins his story. He was an only child and his only relative was his mother. He had no one to order him around so he did as he wanted and because of this, he felt free. The other families used to hide their sons because they thought the government would find them and put them in the army. When a man appeared on horseback one day, Mustafa talked to him instead of running and hiding with the others. He told Mustafa to work hard in school so he could become an official in the government.
