Summary
Chapter 21 shifts focus back to Sylvie a month earlier. The day that she, Estelle, Filip, and Lukas were supposed to leave for Venice, Sylvie became hesitant because Grandma appeared to be in especially bad health. However, Grandma urged Sylvie to go on the trip and to be happy. After arriving in Venice, Sylvie became determined to have a good time. Sylvie felt her romantic feelings towards Lukas begin to become more intense, but she continued to suppress them. Sylvie, Lukas, Estelle, and Filip enjoyed themselves greatly over the following days as they eat good food and go sightseeing. Sylvie found herself enjoying Lukas’ company very much. Sylvie and Lukas commiserated over the racism they had both endured over the years. Sylvie then became emotional because she did not have friends back home.
