Summary
In Chapter 12, Amy speaks to Ma on the phone. Amy mentions Helena’s words about the missing gold and jewels. Internally, Ma is angry that Helena would imply that Sylvie took the heirlooms. Ma thinks to herself about how Helena always coveted the valuable heirlooms and hoped to inherit them. Chapter 13 shifts focus back to Sylvie a month earlier. She spent much of her time with Grandma. She bought Grandma some makeup as a gift. Helena then accused Sylvie of trying to win Grandma’s favor in order to inherit the valuable heirlooms. Sylvie grew angry at this false accusation. Sylvie then recalled a moment from her youth in the Netherlands. Grandma had told Sylvie that, after Grandma’s death, the valuable heirlooms should go to Sylvie, Amy, and Ma.
