Summary
In Chapter 7, Amy arrives in Amsterdam. Amy and Sylvie’s old, ailing grandmother died a few weeks earlier, before Sylvie went missing. Everything in Holland seems quite foreign to Amy, and the fact that Sylvie lived there as a child strikes Amy with a renewed strangeness. Helena, Willem, and Lukas meet Amy at the airport. The three of them seem somewhat stiff, awkward, and reticent. Lukas appears to be in a mysterious bad mood. A woman named Estelle also greets Amy; Estelle says that she was a childhood friend of Sylvie’s. Amy states her worry about Sylvie’s disappearance, and the others also appear to be worried. Helena and Willem make a living by owning and operating a Chinese restaurant. The Tans drive Amy to their home, which is actually a half-hour drive from Amsterdam.
