Structure
The main body of the book is structured into seven parts. Each of those parts is identified by one of seven sacraments in the Christian church, sacraments being an often-ritualized activity through which believers encounter and experience God and/or the Holy Spirit. The first of the seven sections and/or sacraments is Baptism which, in Christian teaching and perspective, marks the beginning of a person’s individual relationship with God. This is a metaphoric representation of the chapter’s content, in that the various chapters in Part I explore different aspects of how the author began her individual relationship with Christianity. As the narrative progresses through its other six parts, the author continues her practice of drawing parallels between the theoretical and metaphorical nature of each part’s title sacrament.
