Canada/Caiette
In Part 1 of the novel, Edwin St. Andrew travels through Canada after being exiled from Britain by his family. He stays briefly in Halifax, Prince Albert (where he attempts to live the farming life with his friend Reginald), and Victoria, before landing in a logging community on the fictitious island of Caiette. Caiette is also featured in Mandel's novel The Glass Hotel. In this book, it is one of the main sites of the anomaly, as Edwin and Vincent Smith both experience it there, in the forest near a large maple tree. When Edwin arrives in Caiette, it is described as a "landscape of sharp beaches and forest, mountains rising up behind" (21) and featuring small villages and totem poles, presumably belonging to the Indigenous people he sees there.
