Deeti
Deeti is an Indian poppy farmer who sees an apparition of a ship, the Ibis, although she’s never ventured from her small village on the outskirts of Ghazipur and never seen the sea. Deeti has rare gray eyes, which make some people afraid of her. She marries Hukam Singh, who she finds out is an opium addict on her wedding night. Singh blows opium smoke into her face and she passes out. When she wakes up, there is blood between her legs. She later has a daughter, but remains certain Hukam Singh isn't the father because he does not consummate their marriage at any other point. Deeti learns to use plants as medicine or drugs, including opium, marijuana and Datura. When Hukam Singh finally dies of his addiction, Deeti considers committing ritual suicide by burning herself at her husband's funeral pyre, but Kalua, a man who drives...
