Summary
As the Ibis sets out into the open ocean, people begin to get seasick. The conditions below deck are so awful that one man drowns in his own vomit. Deeti learns from another woman who listens to her stomach that she might be pregnant. Every day at noon, Captain Chillingworth comes on deck to chart the Ibis’ course with the two mates. The captain admires Zachary’s watch. When he asks to see it, he notices the name on the back: Adam Danby. Zachary doesn’t know who Danby was, but the captain tells him he was a famous pirate of the South China Sea. Serang Ali gave Zachary the watch, but Zachary lies to the captain and says he got it at a pawn shop in Cape Town.
