Summary
In the beginning of Part One, Honorable Scythe Curie wrote a journal entry, in which she explained that scythes must keep a record of the people they glean, or kill. Curie viewed all of the people she gleaned as innocents. In Chapter 1, a scythe arrived at Citra Terranova’s home. The scythe introduced himself as Honorable Scythe Faraday and stayed for dinner. Citra’s younger brother Ben noted that Faraday had named himself after the scientist Michael Faraday. Citra asked if Scythe Faraday appeared his true age, since he looked about 60, but Faraday said he was around 180 years old. Citra’s parents, Citra, Ben, and Faraday ate Citra’s mother’s home-cooked baked ziti. Throughout the meal, the Terranova family worried that Faraday was there to glean one of them. Citra asked Faraday to just tell them if he planned to glean them...
