Chapter 3 Summary

Kaitlin heads back home to where the new foreman, Rick, is hard at work. Kaitlin doesn't like Rick, but he has experience, and so he is valuable to farming. Kaitlin's mother has gone down to San Diego to see Kaitlin's father.

Kaitlin also recalls the hatred of the Crutchfields, stretching back five generations. One of the Crutchfield sisters, Maggie, got pregnant before marriage, so one of the other sisters, who became a Malone, refused to speak to her again. The family land of Twin Oaks was divided up between the Malones and the Crutchfields, and Kaitlin is happy that their land has the best views of the surrounding countryside. While the Malones farmed, the Crutchfields leased their lands to businesses, motels, and malls. The Malone land is still green and beautiful, surrounded by urban sprawl.
