In the graphic novel School Trip by Jerry Craft, Riverdale Academy Day school students Maury, Liam, Ramon, Drew, Jordan, Andy, Ashley, Samira, and Alexandra are on their way to Paris, France for their school trip. What they do not know is that they will learn as much about each other and the challenges each faces as they will about the culture and arts of Paris.
While Jordan and his friends, Drew and Liam are glad they have been chosen to go to Paris, they are unhappy that Andy, who never has anything positive to say about anything, is going along as well. Since Jordan fears that Andy will make Ramon's or Maury’s trip miserable if they have to room with him, Jordan offers to be Andy’s roommate. Maury rooms with Ramon and quickly befriends Ramon. Maury’s family is wealthy. So, he treats Ramon to room service. Later, Maury pays for dinner for all the students several nights in a row because the credit cards belonging to the teachers were not approved for use overseas.
Andy, as expected, grates on everyone’s nerves with his constant hateful jokes and critical remarks. The students try to teach him to be kinder in gentle ways. However, when Andy speaks out against Ramon, Ramon tells Andy that he hates Andy and has hated him since they met.
The others try to help Andy understand how he has hurt Ramon’s feelings, but Andy only sees the power he holds over Ramon. When Drew tells Andy that Andy never really tries to understand how others feel, Andy remarks that he does not want to hear about the racism Drew encounters because it makes Andy feel uncomfortable. Andy argues that he is just as disadvantaged as Drew because Black kids get all the scholarships and good job offers. Drew concludes the conversation by telling Andy that he believes that he is better than Andy. Drew argues that he studies harder, practices harder for sports, and tries to be a better friend than Andy does. He argues these qualities fit the definition of a better person.
Back at home, the troublemakers at school are shocked when Ramon stands up for his new friend, Maury. They agree to leave Maury alone. Jordan, who was accepted to a private art school, learns that his parents are not going to allow him to accept the offer. Jordan is upset only because his parents did not include him in that decision. He had already decided to stay at RAD.
Jordan concludes by saying that he and his friends have come to realize that having the courage to work out their problems, instead of hiding from them, is the best way to handle any issues that might arise.
