Summary
Chapter 17
Janey is sleeping in Miles’ bed while he is on a blow up mattress on the floor. He wakes to her screaming for help from a bad dream. Although it’s not yet morning, Miles offers to take Jane out for donuts and hot chocolate. He tells her to get dressed without waking their parents. While he dresses he notes the items in his room; jazz posters, cased taxidermy insects, a replica of a human skull, and blown-glass medicine bottles. He takes a look out of the window to see a wonderful day on the horizon, no fog, no clouds, and the promise of sunshine. Unfortunately, he begins to notice the black crows collecting on the telephone wires. He starts to feel anxious when Janey comes into his room to see if he’s ready. She looks out the window...
