The Novel's Title (SCAT)

The novel's title symbolizes the message that man needs to stop harming the environment for monetary gain. Twilly leaves this in Section 22 when he realizes that Red Diamond Energy is drilling there even though it is a wildlife preserve. The message is a play on words as he has found panther poop there and scat means poop. However, it also means to get out which is the message he is sending to Red Diamond Energy.

Meals

The meals in the novel symbolize people communing with each other and and demonstrate the closeness of the family units. Nick and his mother have spaghetti a lot, but they joke about it. When his father comes home, the two men make a mess eating their food with their left hand, but everyone has fun. This shows that they are a close family.
