Summary

In the first part of Chapter 16, Nick tells Marta about Duane's visit. Marta does not think that it is good that Duane knows where Nick lives. Then he tells her about the book he is reading that Twilly referenced and that Wendell Waxmo is gone according to Duane who acted as if he had something to do with it. When they get to their biology class, they find out that they have a new substitute teacher who is normal. Duane, however, is not in class which means that Nick does not have his biology book. He wonders whether Duane had returned to his old ways.

Meanwhile, the arson investigator meets Jimmy Lee Bayliss who tells him that he had chased after a wild animal that had been carrying Duane Jr's backpack. The investigator opens it and finds a butane blowtorch. Jimmy Lee Bayliss...
