Friendship

The central concept of friendship contributes to much of the characters’ conflict and motivation. The reader meets Zoey as she breaks into her father’s office, motivated by her curiosity regarding her best friend, Thora’s, disappearance. The conflict between Zoey and Val involves the fact that Val befriended Thora at the sake of Zoey’s friendship with her just before she disappeared. Conflict also arises when Val befriends Charlotte, posing a threat to both Zoey and Marion. Zoey’s need for a friend is evident when Marion arrives on the island. Their bond, though, is solidified through the trust and bond that emerge from shared traumatic experiences. Zoey and Marion’s friendship motivates them to protect one another, which Zoey directs mostly toward Val.
