Summary
Chapter 1 is titled “Summer.” It opens with Becca, an 11-year-old girl, meditating in the backyard. Her brothers are in the yard with her: Jammer is practicing hockey; K.C. is reading a book about physics; and Bailey, who has cerebral palsy, is dancing and singing in his wheelchair. The four siblings are quadruplets. Becca feels like her siblings have their own thing that identifies them, but that she does not.
Chapter 2 is titled “On Being a Coward.” Becca does not feel like she can focus, which is why she meditates. Becca starts thinking about her good friend MacKenzie who moved away. She remembers a night that they snuck out and invited an unpopular boy, Nic, to join them and how joyful the night was. Becca thinks about how she followed the rest of the kids at school and quit being friends with MacKenzie...
