Futaki
Futaki is the first character introduced in the novel. He lives in the village and works as a farmer and manual laborer. The narrative gives little background info about him, instead portraying him through his actions. Like the other villagers, he feels increasingly hopeless about his own future, as well as the future of the estate in general. Futaki desperately seeks to escape a life of increasing poverty, but he vacillates between which course of action would be best. Like several of the other villagers, he chooses to trust Irimiás, but by the end of the novel, Futaki’s faith in Irimiás dissolves. After Futaki, Irimiás, and some of the other villagers arrive in a new town, Futaki decides to acquire a job there on his on, rather than rely on Irimiás further.
