Summary
In Chapter 5.1, Sapphira invites Henry’s nephew, Martin Colbert, to stay with them indefinitely. Martin arrives at Henry and Sapphira’s home, and Sapphira greets him warmly. Martin has many debts—including gambling debts—and is happy to leave his hometown, where he owes money to many people. Sapphira specifically tasks Nancy with helping Martin bring in his bags. Martin quickly develops a sexual interest in Nancy, and Nancy feels quite uncomfortable. Nancy does her best to follow Sapphira’s orders while communicating as little as possible with the unnerving Martin. In Chapter 5.2, Martin continues to reside at Henry and Sapphira’s house. He is fond of telling semi-scandalous stories at dinner, but Sapphira never admonishes him. After dinner one night, Martin sees Nancy alone, and he forcibly kisses her. Nancy begs for mercy and flees.
