Summary
In Chapter 3.3, Jezebel dies of old age. Sapphira shows no deep grief over Jezebel’s death, but she does become intent on having a lavish memorial for Jezebel, including a large dinner with friends and neighbors. Sapphira’s motivation appears to be based more in the desire to show off her wealth rather than to show respect or grief for Jezebel. Sapphira threatens the slaves with severe punishment if they make any mistakes in preparing for the memorial and the dinner. After the dinner, Henry goes immediately back to the mill, and Sapphira feels even more worried that Henry and Nancy are having an affair there.
