Bright shining star
The bright shining star is a symbol of hypnosis found throughout the novel. It has its origins as a blazon on the red gemstone of the pocket watch Maudire uses to hypnotize people. Stolen later by Crawford, the shining star symbol becomes an image which helps to keep people hypnotized, and which induces them to hypnotism in the first place. Aunt Lucy has an image of the star in her home, while Felix sees the star when his eyes are opened or closed.
Pocket watch
The pocket watch with a red gemstone is owned and used by Maudire in his traveling carnival sideshow for hypnotism. The pocket watch is never out of Maudire’s sight. Maudire uses the pocket watch to teach Crawford the basics of hypnotism. Maudire is later killed by Crawford for the pocket watch.
