Summary

In Part IV, “Woods,” Chapter 41, Sam withdraws from everyone. She even stops communicating with Courtney and Noah.

One night, she finds Courtney working at the kitchen table. She is “taking an online business course” and rarely sleeps (202). They talk about happiness, work, school, and the future. Sam is reluctant to attend college though Courtney wants her to.

Halle calls Sam to express her condolences. Sam tells her people are “making such a big deal” about Mitchell’s death (204).

In Chapter 42, instead of attending her senior prom, Sam drives to Gloucester alone. While there, she meets Kyle, Justin, Sean, and Amber, a group of climbers. When they see Sam climb, they are impressed. Everyone thinks Justin is jealous of her skill. She cuts her knee but Amber bandages her.
