Summary

In Part III, “Trouble,” no matter where she looks or who she asks, Sam cannot find Mitchell. She loves him, but is angry. For a while, she hopes he will return. Then she “stops thinking about him” (136).

When Sam turns 16, Courtney gives her new climbing shoes. They fit “because Courtney knows Sam’s size” (137).

Sam and Corey steal his “dad’s liquor” and search for Mitchell online (138). Sam wonders if she “would rather be with Declan” than Corey (138). She feels closest to Declan during practice. On their rides home, however, his attitude towards her seems to change.

In Chapter 27, Sam takes a job at Freeda’s and attends summer school. Although she hates school, she likes the lessons about rocks. Courtney urges her to apply herself, desperate for Sam to attend college. One day, Mitchell appears at Freeda’s.
