Ischia
The island of Ischia, located off of Naples, Italy, is the short story's primary setting. Salvatore grows up on the island with his mother, father, and two younger brothers. Though his life is simple, Salvatore is able to find beauty, joy, and goodness within it. He particularly loves to be near the water, diving off of rocks, and playing with his brothers.
When Salvatore must leave home for the navy, this is the first time he has ever ventured off of the island before. During his time abroad, he begins to realize how much he loves and relies upon Ischia for a sense of stability and identity. The noise and chaos of the other places he visits amplify his longing for the quiet and serenity of Ischia.
