Summary
Salvatore headed for home. After getting off of "the steamer from Naples," he took a rowboat to the island (2). On shore, he saw his father, mother, and brothers. His brothers looked grown up. He looked "among the crowd," desperate to find the girl (2). He did not see her anywhere. He jumped out of the boat. His family embraced him. They "exchanged their greetings," crying and jumping with joy (2). He asked his family if they knew where the girl was. They said they "had not seen her for two or three weeks" (2).
That evening, when the moon was out and the town was lit up, Salvatore "walked down to the Grande Marina to her house" (2). She and her mother were sitting outside on the doorstep. He felt a bit uncomfortable and hesitant. It had been a long time since they had seen each other...
