The Eleventh Day: Katrina Summary
The children fall asleep watching television. The next morning they get an automated call from the state warning them of the approaching hurricane. Esche answers, and realizes for the first time that they could very easily all die from the catastrophe that is about to occur. She thinks of her mother who died just after a hurricane years ago. She also wonders about her baby and what it will be like. Skeetah wakes up and they talk in the back of the house. They overhear a dog barking outside in the storm. Daddy supposes that the storm will last two or three hours. The children remain in the living room, and Skeetah eventually realizes that water is coming into the house, up through the floor.
