Point of View
The novel is written in the third person and is narrated by an omniscient narrator. The narrator relays the characters' thoughts and feelings to the reader in vivid detail, which would likely not be the case were the characters narrating their own stories. Because the narrative voice is omniscient, the reader becomes privy to all aspects of the characters' lives, and we have no reason not to trust what is said about each character. If the characters were narrating their own chapters, the reader would be less able to blindly trust what they were told as everyone relays stories with some kind of bias. Despite the fact that the characters are not the storytellers, the narration does shift slightly between characters enabling the reader to see subtle differences in the way events are discussed.
