Jack is a ten-year-old boy living with his parents in New York City. His mom frequently brings home abused women, usually prostitutes, so they can heal and she can help them. On one occasion, Annaliese brings home a young girl, Emma, who has been sexually abused by her uncle. Emma is distant and tries to escape the apartment, but Jack watches over and eventually befriends her, although she remains skittish. It is the first day of the trial against Jack.
