Chapters 9 and 10 Summary
As Katie rides to the beach with Alex and the kids in his jeep, she thinks about how the loneliness she sees in Alex matches her own loneliness. When they get to the beach, the kids want to go right into the water, so Katie watches them while Alex unloads everything. While the kids play, Alex and Katie talk. When Alex mentions his wife, he apologizes, saying he doesn't want Katie to think that's all he talks about.
Katie assures him he should talk about her. He loved her very much and she's the mother of his children. Katie gets Alex to tell her how he met his wife. He mentions to Katie that they're friends, which surprises Katie, but then Katie realizes that she and Alex are friends.
