Chapters 3 and 4 Summary
Alex Wheatley owns the old-fashioned country store where Katie shops for her groceries. He is a widower with two children. He was a military investigator in the Army, so he tends to notice things that a normal person might not. His wife, Carly, died over a year ago. Alex has noticed Katie coming and going over the past couple of months.
He's watched her transformation, from gaunt with big black circles under her eyes, to putting on a few pounds and looking more rested. Alex notices that Katie doesn't talk too much and that when he tries to engage her in conversation, she tends to be frightened and shy. Katie has formed a "friendship" with his five-year-old daughter, Kristen, who calls her "Miss Katie."
