A young college student as the story opens, Layla is looking forward to beginning her life as Will's wife though she continues to struggle with self-doubt and worry that she isn't really destined for true happiness. These worries stem from losing her parents years earlier and the cruelty imposed by her grandmother who had insisted that Layla was responsible for the deaths of her parents and was undeserving of happiness.
