Point of View
The novel is narrated in the first-person, switching between the descriptions of different characters in each section, all members of a Denver family. The author places no limitations on the access to any of the character's inner thoughts, allowing the reader to understand their true motivations and conflicts, though they are not always truthful with the people in their lives. For example, Sierra reveals her true feelings about her mother moving back home with her and her father, as well as the crippling resentment she feels toward her, but she finds it much more difficult to voice these inner thoughts to her parents. Although she wishes for her mother to become an active part of her life again, Sierra refuses to lower her expectations for her and thus she struggles to get close to her again.
