Summary
Sierra plays outside with some of the boys in her eighth-grade class. While they dig in the ground, a boy discovers a buried bone. Days after their discovery, the children gather in the gym for the announcement of their final project. Mrs. Sharply announces that they will be caring for “sugar babies,” sacks of sugar. Sierra is partnered with Roberto Martinez, the boy who found the bone. They name their baby Miranda and Sierra goes home.
Sierra watches TV with her father over breakfast and she asks to go and see the dig site. He tells her that they likely will not be going even though she wants to. Sierra’s mother drives up to the house despite having first left three years ago. Sierra is resentful about her mother’s return and the way her father acts as though nothing is wrong...
