Summary
When Chiu awakes on Monday morning, he hears a man moaning in the station courtyard. Chiu looks out of the cell window and sees a man tied to a tree in the yard. To Chiu’s shock, he realizes that the man is Fenjin, a recent graduate from the Law Department at Harbin University who had once been in the class on Marxist materialism that Chiu teaches. Chiu suddenly realizes that his wife must have sent Fenjin to fetch Chiu from the police station. Chiu is angered and disappointed, as he had expected his wife to talk to Harbin University’s security system and have them send a group of security officials to fetch him.
