The power of words
It is no understatement to declare that Iris and Roman’s worldview is based on their faith in the power of words. In the first place, Roman and Iris became attracted to one another in the previous novel through their correspondence. Indeed, letter writing is a central motif and ties in well with this theme. In Ruthless Vows, Roman’s captivity necessitates a renewal of his correspondence with Iris, leading the couple back to one another.
Surprisingly, Ross introduces this theme through Mr. Kitt, who has a poor opinion of the written word. Mr. Kitt goes so far as to accuse Iris of seducing Roman through her writing talent: “I’m saying that your words have bewitched him. And I need you to let him go” (17).
